Back to school (frugal) shopping

It became real to me when I looked at the calendar and realized that I needed to order school clothes so they could be shipped in time for school to start.

I try to shop online so I can get additional benefit plus a discount. Before I buy anything online, even with a code, I either try to get frequent flyer miles or cash back, too.

I have all of my favorite frugal and deal bloggers in my RSS reader and see them in my Twitter feed, so when I noticed a good discount for Gymboree, I first went to Skymiles Shopping but sadly, they weren’t listed. I tried my backup, MrRebates.com, but they weren’t listed there, either. However, with a 25 percent off code, free shipping and Gym Bucks on my purchase, I decided it was still a good deal. My daughter loves their clothes, they fit well and they last.

My son, however, is outgrowing the matching clothes and cute sayings of Gymboree. I noticed on the Delta Skymiles shopping portal that they were offering bonus miles for back to school, so we clicked on Lands End, which gave us triple miles for our shopping, and Delta will kick in another 500 miles for each $250 spent on back to school. Lands End has a loyalty program, discount code and free shipping, so the clothes for my son gave us multiple benefits.

We had to break down and buy shoes a few weeks ago, with my overbearing mom instructions that these were still for school and better look good for the first day. The kids needed new shoes sans holes although they didn’t wear them much this summer.

And, one final tip although not directly related to school shopping. I always end up finding the best prices for package travel deals on Travelocity, and they offer a cash-back rebate on MrRebates.com. Always check for more than a discount code before you shop online!

Mountain Creek: A waterpark like no other

We’ve been to indoor waterparks: Great Wolf Lodge, Avalanche Bay, Castaway Bay and Kalahari, as well as some smaller, local splash parks with lazy rivers. But we’ve definitely never been to an outdoor waterpark built into the side of a mountain.Mountain Creek waterpark

When we first walked up to the entrance of Mountain Creek in New Jersey, the kids said “where’s the rides?” That’s because the rides are all built into the mountainside. The park also just opened a mountain coaster and a new sports park, which included batting cages, golf, hockey, soccer and more, all with challenges and leaderboards. It also had a tubings/slide ride that simulated snow tubing.Soaring Eagle Mountain Creek

The park also had Soaring Eagle, a tandem seated ride that zips you up and down the mountain on a cable. It looked a lot scarier than it actually was, and it was a really fun ride.

And the water rides. Oh the water rides. Beyond the more traditional grab a tube and slide down, the park also had tarzan swings where you plunge into a cold pool, a slide that ends with a plunge into a pool and cliff jumping. It also has rides you’ve come to expect at a waterpark, including a wave pool and a splash area.

Mountain Creek waterpark mapMy kids, almost 8 and 10, were absolutely fearless here. We first started on the little kid waterslide to warm up, but they soon progressed to the larger slides and both tried the tarzan swing, although my daughter was shaken up because she said the water hurt when she made impact.Mountain Creek cliff jump

My son, thank goodness, was even more fearless because after I flubbed recording his cliff dive, he raced up to do it again. He really wanted evidence to come home and show off to his friends. I don’t blame him, because the closest I came to the cliff jump was recording it.Mountain Creek tubing slide

It was long, hot, exhilarating day and we’d definitely do it again in a heartbeat if we were in the area. New Jersey, you’ve outdone yourself with this waterpark!

For sites from the park, the Travel Channel recently featured it on Xtreme Waterparks.

Our summer of kids camps in Michigan

We started looking at the summer calendar in April. I said to my husband “You’re going where? And when? And where right after that?” With a summer full of travel for his job, I knew I needed to start researching summer camps. The kids are old enough that they no longer want to hang out at the daycare where they once played as toddlers and spent time before and after school in early elementary.

A great resource for the Washtenaw County area is the Ann Arbor Mom Blog. She creates a list of camps with links each year and it’s a great place to start.

The first issue I came across was finding a camp that started early enough in June. We live at the edge of a county and I work in another county. The schools in the county I live in all get out earlier than in the county that I work in, so the camps I found did not start during my husband’s first business trip.

I resorted to searching “Michigan summer camps” to expand my reach and finally found one for the dates I needed – and it just happened to be my alma mater. Eastern Michigan University has a summer Fun Camp, run through its Rec Center. The weeks are themed and kids have swim lessons each day and a field trip each week. The kids went to Zap Zone the week that they were there.

Review: The kids were nervous at first but asked to come back again as the week progressed. They also exchanged phone numbers with some new friends.

When I found Kidsport at the University of Michigan, I was excited because it’s a short walk from where I work and the kids could come to and from work with me without additional stops. The camp has a few options – a morning Kidsport that includes swim lessons and general sports, an afternoon session of specific sports and also an explorations morning and afternoon session at the Museum of Natural History.

The kids chose the week with dance and basketball in the afternoon with the Kidsport general session in the morning. On the last day, the parents were invited to watch the basketball tournament and then the dance routine during halftime.

Review: The kids said the morning Kidsport was “boring” although I think they didn’t like having swim lessons and would rather just swim. Also, the week was very hot.

My daughter ended up doing a second week at Kidsport – this time at the museum in the morning and cheerleading in the afternoon. She said the museum was “boring” after the first day but then after they went on a field trip to another museum and saw mummies, she changed her tune.

Only my daughter went to the second Kidsport because my son had Boy Scout Camp at D-bar-A in Metamora.

Review: My husband attending with my son, but they both came back raving about all of the activities – fishing, horseback riding, whittling, human foosball and swimming. They had one rainy day but still did most of the planned activities. My son’s favorite is archery.

It’s been a busy summer so far and we might book one more camp but so far the ones we’ve found have been a perfect fit for my kids.

Who’s rescuing who? Adopting a dog for your family

When a former high school teacher put a comment on Facebook, it broke my heart: “You get what you pay for” after a former classmate asked for recommendations for dogs and breeds. He was implying that a rescue dog was no good and that you had to shell out big bucks for a pure breed to get anything useful.

He doesn’t know Scully. Or Bella, or Spike. Or much at all, in my opinion.

Just about 13 years ago, we stopped on the way home from a camping trip to the Southfield Civic Center, where the Michigan Humane Society was having a pet adoption fair. Scully, or “Faith” as her rescuers called her, was the only puppy left. She was recently rescued from the streets of Detroit and had fleas and worms. A day later, she had a new home, a new name and medicine to solve her medical issues.

She was a perfect dog, a German Shepherd mix, right until she got sick and we had to say goodbye. She never chewed on our things, she walked with us without a leash and was always waiting at the front door if we accidentally left her out. She was our first and oldest child and it was – and is – still hard to let her go.

Mountain Feist puppiesAbout six months without a dog, the family knew we needed another pet. With two kids each wanting a dog and wanting to sleep with it, I reasoned that replacing a 60-pound dog with two 25-pound dogs would be an even trade.

I didn’t factor in the double poop.

We found Spike and Bella on the PetFinder website and went to visit them at Pet Supplies Plus in Canton. Every other Saturday, the Homeward Bound Rescue League brings in dogs that are up for adoption. We brought them home to foster and get to know them while my husband was still away on a business trip. He had quite the surprise waiting for him when he returned home.

The Mountain Feist puppies are 10 months old now, potty trained, hyper and mischievous and all get –out. They dig holes in the backyard, take off with the kids stuffed Spike, Mountain Feistanimals and bark in the backyard like their lives depend on it.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way. You see, we have love and we have friendship and we’ll build a strong family bond that makes these newcomers a part of our family for years to come.

You really do get so much more than what you pay for.

When you and your spouse both travel

You become a very good juggler. For example, my husband is leaving for a work trip to Ireland today, right after my son’s baseball game. My mom is coming to the game, spending the night and picking me up at the airport tomorrow once I arrive home from the Type A Conference in Charlotte.

It’s not ideal but sometimes you have to lean on friends and family to make it work. So how do we do it?

  • A master calendar is mandatory. If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist. Similarly, in my mind, you are not allowed to write “maybe” events on the calendar. Unless you know it’s happening for sure, don’t put it on my calendar. Use a sticky note or make a note in your own calendar (*sneaks stare at the husband*) but don’t make me get the white out ready once it doesn’t happen.

  • Know when to give and when to push. There will be times when you both are scheduled to be out of town at the same time. Will it work? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the number of days, day of the week and what’s going on with the kids’ activities and their calendar. It is possible for grandma to come down for the weekend, or is there a big game or scouts outing that requires a lot of coordination?

  • Having help also helps. We quickly realized that we’re both working, and that cleaning the house was taking away precious time with our kids. My dad needed something extra, so now he comes over every other week to clean the house (and we pay him), plus he usually gets to see the kids at one of their games.

And we’re just talking about kids. But our fur kids, the two puppies, also need walks, potty breaks and lots of attention.

Travel, especially business travel, is not glamorous. It only looks that way because you only share the fun things – a good dinner, a minute in the pool, a welcoming hotel room – on your social networks. What you don’t see are the flight delays, cab rides and time spent in windowless conference rooms.

But with constant communication and a good network, we make it work. How do you make it work?

Learning lessons from kids’ sports and activities

End of the year Girl Scouts party – check.

End of the year Boy Scouts party – check.

Last soccer game – check.

Dance recital – check.

Gymnastics expo – almost.

Last baseball game – this month.

Dance recitalCheck by check, I see my time coming back to me as the kids’ activities start to wind down now that the school year has ended. For just about a month, we’ll have no obligations and activities. I can’t believe football practice starts at the end of July, but there it is. In the meantime, we’re ready for a few summer camps, a trip to see grandpa in Washington state and maybe a family vacation to New York/New Jersey area.

In the next couple of weeks, we have some big decisions to make. If my daughter stays in soccer, she moves up to the age bracket that travels. This means we won’t have time to also do dance, gymnastics and maybe not even Girl Scouts. I don’t think she really likes playing the game per se, but I do know she loves the group of girls that she’s been playing with for years.

My son took a year off of football and is going back this year, and that will be a big change, too. Practice is several days during the week plus a game on the weekend. So while our calendar is clearing, it’s the calm before the fall storm. Little League baseball

I don’t try to push them into anything and the hardest thing is to limit their activities and say no, you can’t try softball right now because you already have x, y and z you’ve committed to. How do you know when you have the right balance for each child? When they can get their homework done every night?

Don’t get me wrong – I love going to see my kids performing and doing what they love. It may be a juggling act at times but we’re all happy, healthy and learning valuable skills for the future.

Camels, tigers and carnivals, only at the Belleville Strawberry Festival

Give a camel a lemon … and you’re at the Strawberry Festival. Makes perfect sense, right?

Belleville Strawberry FestivalEvery year, the kids look forward to Father’s Day. Well, not really Father’s Day per se, but because the annual Strawberry Festival in Belleville is on Father’s Day weekend every June.

This year, my daughter’s dance rehearsal was Friday and the recital fell on the Saturday evening, so our days were booked. However, we still had Sunday afternoon, so we walked into town and found this:

Camels! Sure, we’ve been on pony rides but this was the first year I’ve seen camel rides here. What a strange thing to think that you can walk less than a mile from your house in the suburbs and see a camel! The festival also had some visiting white tigers, although we didn’t go into the tent to see them.

Instead, we were busy feeding the Belleville Strawberry Festival camelcamels. When life hands you lemons, feed a camel!

Sadly, the afternoon rain showers chased us back home, but not before we had our fill of elephant ears, a pizza pretzel and butterfly chips. After all, the carnival food is what I look forward to every year!

Another School Year Flies Past

It seems that our school district gets out fairly early compared to others in the state and across the country, but I can’t believe that today marks the end of 4th and 2nd grade for my kids. The years are starting to fly by and with each milestone, mom becomes a little more sentimental.

We have very few open dates on the busy summer calendar, and soon they’ll be off to summer camps, a visit to grandpa in Washington state and a trip or two with mom and dad. As I watch them grow, I’m proud of who they are becoming and can see the light shining from within.

Next year will bring significant changes to our family – my son enters a fifth and sixth grade middle school while my daughter stays in the elementary. If we stay in this same district, my kids won’t be in the same school building again for seven more years – when they are in 9th and 11th grade. So far, my son has been the “responsible” one – taking care of his sister’s lunch money and making sure she’s where she is supposed to be every day.

Next year will be a new adventure, and I can’t help but be sad when I think of them separated, although I know it’s just the next step in this thing we call life.

Play ball

Baseball season started last weekend. My son played 2nd base, catcher and was the closer (closing pitcher) for the game. Allow me to brag for a moment because the coach gave him the game ball. Not every game he has ends this way, sometimes there are tears, so the need to cherish the accomplishments is a goal.
