Peace in the Poconos at the Shawnee Inn

I knew it was going to be a good location when we say the sign for the Appalachian Trail. The Trail has always intrigued me and when I read Bill Bryson’s book, I laughed the whole way through it.

Shawnee Inn Golf bridgeThe Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is right in the prime location of the Delaware Water Gap – where the Delaware River cuts through the Pocono Mountains between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Most of the land around it has been turned into a national park – and for good reason – the scenery was breathtaking.

On our tour, we took the golf cart over the bridge to the golf island. But there’s a little more than golf. Shawnee also has its “Shawna Farms” organic gardens, where the produce makes it way to the restaurant tables. And although the residents were out looking for dinner, we saw the home of a bald eagle family high up in the tree, and my daughter brought home a feather we found on the ground.

Formerly on the island but moved due to previous flooding, Shawnee also has an apiary – honey bees – from which they gather honey for food, the spa and for their craft brewery.

Shawnee InnWhat drew me in the most to Shawnee was the history. More than 100 years old, Shawnee has been a draw for more than a century for city folk to escape the heat and take in the healing air and waters of the Poconos. The resort has been in the process of adding historic photos all over the hotel and I had to stop and check out every one – Ed Sullivan, Arnold Palmer, Jackie Gleason. In its heyday, Shawnee drew a broad audience to the Shawnee Playhouse, where the first hour-long radio show took place.

Driving range kidsMy daughter tried it but my son really loved the driving range, which is complimentary for guests, and the chipping course, which was a perfect place to hone his burgeoning skills. He also spent a lot of time on the putting green, lining up his golf balls and creating a competition amongst them. And if you don’t have enough to do by heading to the river, golfing, volleyball, horseshoes or the driving range, you can go on day trips like canoeing or kayaking on the river (Shawnee also recently added stand-up paddleboarding) or a short drive to Bushkill Falls.Bushkill Falls

But you don’t have to go far for food and drink. Shawnee now has its own brewery, ShawneeCraft. They even use honey in one of their brews, Apiarus, which you can find at the Gem and Keystone Brewpub. Every morning, you can find a breakfast buffet at the River Room and for a casual lunch break, the Courtyard Bistro has the view.

The use of honey does not stop with the food or the drinks. I had a ShawneeCraft wrap and facial in the Shawnee Spa. A scrub first and then you’re coated with a paste that includes mud and beer. And if your appointment is after noon, the treatment comes with a complimentary taste of ShawneeCraft (I had to pass because it was before 10 a.m. but I did enjoy it at the Gem and Keystone).

Horseshoes at Shawnee InnThe service at Shawnee also brings a past era to mind. My kids loved that Jesse and Brandon became familiar faces who took them on the tour, river exploration and s’mores by the campfire each night.

As if on cue, a deer and her two babies came out each night while we were by the bonfire. The kids saw big fish in the river and we saw many kinds of birds. Shawnee Inn truly is an escape and a place to relax and rejuvenate.

A world away at Crystal Springs Resort

After a hectic weekend in New York City, we headed to New Jersey to Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, New Jersey. In just over an hour, we were transported to a lush, green, mountainous area in northern New Jersey. Driving up to the Grand Cascades Lodge of Crystal Springs Resort, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the ski lodges in Colorado.

Grand Cascades LodgeThe lodge was laid out well, with the covered pool in the middle, and a terrace with fireplaces, lounging areas and another area for games, including table tennis, foosball and pool. The kids could not get enough of the Biosphere pool. In addition to a beautifully designed pool, the area had a hidden waterslide, hot tub and a fish tank that you could swim up to and view partially under water – almost swimming with the fishes!Biosphere Pool Fish Tank

Biosphere pool at Grand Cascades LodgeThe second day, I finally convinced them to check out the outdoor pool – and what another great discovery! The two-tiered pool area had an infinity pool on the lower level and an upper pool with a sprayer, swirling whirlpool circle and a water slide. Just around the corner, a small zero-entry toddler pool had a spray of water and was the perfect size for little ones.

Grand Cascades Lodge pool

Besides the pool, the kids loved the putting course right outside of the hotel. They also have a night glow golf activity for the kids.

Our room, a one-bedroom suite, was spacious with a large tub, full kitchen, pull out couch and patio with furniture. The kitchen made it convenient to give the kids breakfast. (We hate to eat out too much with the kids for breakfast because they hardly eat.)

We had dinner one night at the Crystal Tavern. The Kobe beef burger was excellent. The tavern has a kids menu but the atmosphere was not really child-friendly.Crystal Tavern Kobe burger

Reflections Spa Crystal SpringsI was fortunate enough to have a massage at the Reflections Spa, which features a fire and ice theme. The ceiling area has more than 8,000 hanging quartz crystals and the walls are a deep red. Following the massage (and add on paraffin foot treatment needed after walking New York City), each guest experiences the hot salt foot soak. First, you rub your feet in a bed of fine salt, a texture similar to beach sand, and then you turn your chair around and immerse your feet into a hot water soak. Pure luxury!

The resort felt a world away from New York yet was just a short drive. It’s a perfect location for a family getaway. Oh, and we also went to Mountain Creek, Crystal Springs’ waterpark, but we’ll save that story for next time.

Exploring New York City with Children

I’ve been to Manhattan several times – but every single time has been some sort of work-related event. The first company I worked for out of college had its headquarter near Times Square and an operations office in New Jersey. I went to BlogHer in 2010. However, each of these trips included minimal sightseeing (or seeing sights if they were on the way to a destination) and did not include kids.

So walking from x street to y avenue with kids in tow was sure to be a challenge. However, I’m proud to report that my kids were in it to win it. They were troopers and never really complained about all of the walking we did. They were too busy looking up and looking around.

Hampton Inn Times Square NorthWe stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square North. This hotel (regular-sized to most, small by NYC skyscraper standards) was in a perfect location, 8th Avenue and 51st Street) and was everything my family needed – comfortable beds and a free, hot breakfast.Statue of Liberty

We had tickets to the Gray Line Bus Tours so we headed to the open-air top deck of the bus to start exploring the city. You can hop on and hop off the tour, so we got off at Battery Park and got in the long and winding line for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty.

It was a perfect boat ride to see the city skyline and to cruise up to Lady Liberty herself. The day was a bit cloudy but warm and the kids were excited to see the statue in person.

After visiting the statue (and trying hard to get the right angle of people vs. the statue in the back of a photo), we took the ferry back to Battery Park (skipping Ellis Island because we were all starving by this point) and got back on the bus for the next loop of the tour.

Big Piano at FAO SchwarzWe departed again near Central Park and walked to Patsy’s Pizza, which turned out to be a perfect location for a casual meal with hungry kids.Times Square

Once we were refueled, we were ready to see more tourist sites. We stopped into Dylan’s Candy Bar, American Girl, FAO Schwarz (and the famous piano from Big) and then wandered through Times Square. We also had a brief encounter with the Naked Cowboy, capping out the tourist must-sees.

The next day, we wandered around Central Park and then checked out to head to our next destination in New Jersey.

We’d love to come back to the city again, going up into the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock and to see a Broadway play. But for now, we’ll take our memories and make plans to return.

Planning a Weekend in New York City with Kids

We’ve been talking about New York for a long time. My husband has no desire to go to the city because there are no golf courses and he’s worried about navigating such a bustling place, especially with kids. I’ve been to New York several times – my first job’s headquarters were there, and I’ve been there for BlogHer.

But now we’ve got our plane tickets booked and we’ll have a weekend in Manhattan before heading out to some resorts in upstate New York and Pennsylvania.

We have a full day on Saturday to fill, as well as most of Sunday. So far, my list of attractions include:

  • Ground Zero: I took the subway to the towers from New Jersey in the mid-90s. I’d love to see the memorial.
  • Statue of Liberty: The inside is closed for remodeling but I’d still like to take the ferry to Ellis Island and see it up close.
  • Empire State Building: I’ve never been in it.
  • Central Park: I know there are a lot of activities here. I need to do some research and see what would be fun with the kids.
  • Times Square: Definitely a walk-through with the family for the experience.
  • FAO Schwartz: A family landmark in the city.
  • Dylan’s Candy Bar: Found this in a search and it sounds like an amazing store.
  • NY pizza: I need to find a family-friendly place to get some New York-style pizza. Our family loves our Chicago style, though!

I’ve thought about a Broadway show but the tickets are pretty expensive and the kids are still young, so I’m not sure how much they would get out of the experience for the money that we’d pay. I’d rather wander around the city and have that for the first-time experience.

Land, Sea and Happiness at Westin Los Cabos

It’s not every day that you see a hotel built partially into the side of a mountain. For that matter, I’d say that it’s also the first time I saw a restaurant built around a mountain, as well. But at the Westin Resort and Spa in Cabo San Lucas, the hotel is where land meets the sea and is juxtaposed in perfect harmony with the elements.

Westin Los CabosFor my trip to Cabo (on a fam trip with my husband, who is a golf writer), we spent two nights at the Sheraton Los Cabos and two at the Westin Los Cabos. The Westin is breathtaking on arrival – it almost looks like a scene out of Star Wars on the sand planet. And how can you not have a smile on your face when you walk up and a drink is prepared for you – on the house.

The hotel, we were told, was designed to work with the earth and with Mexican heritage. The arch in the hotel is to reflect the famous arch of Cabo San Lucas. The colors are all traditional and the landscaping is full of sand, cactus and palm trees, just like Cabo.

Although we didn’t have a chance to play it, the 9-hole putt-putt course next to the ocean beach looks like an ideal setting for families. I know my son would have played more than once had he been there. The pools were gorgeous, with one strategically placWestin Los Cabos Arched in the shadow of the hotel arch for shade during the scorching summer months.

Westin Los Cabos Golf

The rooms are gorgeous, with a glass-sided shower, and every single room is ocean view. We saw a variety of occupants with families dining at the more casual restaurants and couples taking in the scenic views and out-of-this-world meal choices. There’s even a tequila bar, La Cantina, for those who want a little nightlife without heading into the town.

Westin Los Cabos RestaurantsWhile we were there, a wedding party and guests were preparing for the big ceremony, and we saw happiness as they gathered for the life-changing night. The spirit in the air matched the smiles on everyone’s faces, because it’s simply difficult to find a reason to frown in Cabo.

Sheraton Hacienda in Los Cabos is muy bueno

It only rains two to five times per year in the Los Cabos area. They tell me it’s a major news event and people panic when rain is in the forecast, even though they usually end up getting only a few drops. So when you look at the forecast, every day is a bright orange sun with temperatures varying from high 80s to low 90s. Which makes vacation planning oh-so-easy.

The Sheraton Hacienda is a gorgeous resort with more swimming pools than I can count, villa style rooms and a never-ending view of the Sea of Cortez. The complex has two five-diamond restaurants within walking distance of each other. We dined at both: De Cortez and Pitahayas. Pitahayas has a wine cellar with several rooms of any wine you can imagine. The rooms are comfortable, and pools are the perfect temperature and we saw many families enjoying the beach and kids pool.

The breakfast buffet at Tomatoes Restaurant is a wonderful array of America and Mexican dishes to satisfy any hunger. And every restaurant has an open air section – perfect for climates with only sun in the forecast. I didn’t try the spa or the golf course here but heard from others that both are excellent.

We also had a kayaking and snorkeling adventure with Terramar Destinations to see the famous arch and close to shore snorkeling. Our guides were outstanding and the although we were all adults on the trip, I think it would have been perfect for older kids who like adventure. We saw sea lions, black crabs and many types of fish. We stopped at Lovers Beach on the Sea of Cortez side and were warned that the waters were treacherous across the sand at Divorce Beach, which faces the ocean. Some in my party also did cliff diving off of Pelican Rock, but I was happy to stay partially submerged and take photos.

The Sheraton Hacienda has something for everyone, and with the newly expanded children’s club and area, it would be a perfect place for a return visit with our children. But for now, I’m enjoying the crashing waves and letting the kids have a great time at home with grandma. But I think the Sea of Cortez will call me back some day.

It really is Pure Michigan

Every summer, it’s the same scene: People hoping to get out of work early on a Friday, and then everyone is in a traffic jam with boats, campers and packed cars headed north. But something magical happens when you cross the Zilwaukee Bridge: you’re “up north.”

This Memorial Day weekend, our destination was Glen Arbor to The Homestead Resort. We didn’t get in until late Friday but it was perfect timing because they had a Memorial Day celebration on Saturday – face painting, chairlift rides, rubber boat races down the stream and a barbecue. Oh, and don’t forget the tie-dye shirts that said “I was up north at the Homestead Resort.”

After a full day of fun plus swimming in the pool with the waterslide, we headed into Glen Arbor for dinner. It was getting a little chilly so we didn’t eat on the dock, but we still love the food at Boone Dock’s. My daughter had a little too much fun and immediately fell asleep on my lap in the booth, so we got her dinner to go. We then had to hit my required destination Cherry Republic. I always have to stock up on wine, and the kids love the free samples of food and treats. We ended up with wine of course, chocolate covered cherries and sour cherry gummies. Now that my daughter had a nap and snacked on her dinner, we hit the tennis courts and the playground next to it.

We asked the kids what they wanted to do on Sunday and the votes were unanimous for the dune climb. We had to wait out some pretty heavy thunderstorms in the morning, but as soon as it was clear, we headed to Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. A year and a half ago, we only made it past the initial climb and one more small hill. This year, the kids were much bigger, mom and dad were in better shape so we made it all the way to Lake Michigan! It was quite a hike up and down sandy dunes but the kids (and mom) were troopers. Afterwards, we stopped for a well-deserved ice cream in Glen Arbor.

The boys decided they weren’t quite done so they dropped us off and went golfing at Manitou Passage. My daughter and I decided to cool off at the pool, but it was a little too cool for me after the earlier rain, so I stuck to the hottub. We had a late dinner in the hotel when the boys got back and that was the end of our adventure.

If we had more time, we would’ve added canoeing, putt-putt and bike riding to the mix. Even so, everyone agreed that it was a Pure Michigan adventure. We can’t wait to do it again!

Filling up the weeks with summer travel

I’ve been studying our summer calendar so much that I’ve actually printed out June, July and August and have penciled in various scenarios.  I recently started a new job and have some days off, and this will be the first summer that my husband is full time in his new job. Although he works from home, he travels quite a bit. So when he’s gone, I need to find camps, grandmas or other resources for the kids.

But all is not lost. We do have a few trips planned, and the summer should be jam-packed, along with soccer, baseball, a dance recital and opening our pool. So far, we have planned:

The Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor: This is one of our favorite places. The resort has so many things – a pool with a slide, a pool with a waterfall on Lake Michigan, golf and a gorgeous spa. The kids love to wander around by the fiddling frog and explore the resort.

Also, Glen Arbor is a great summer town. I always stock up on my cherry wine from the Cherry Republic while I’m there (there’s a store in Ann Arbor but no liquor license – boo!). They have public tennis courts, a great canoe rental place and a fun putt-putt golf that also has a giant chess etc.

Cabo San Lucas: I’m lucky enough to tag along on a work trip with my husband and will have many tales and adventures to tell!

Charlotte, NC: Type A Parent Conference: This will be my third year at the conference and second as a speaker. But, it will be my first time as “just” a blogger. Although I have a new job, it has nothing to do with female bloggers, unless they happen to be University of Michigan alumni. I’m excited to see a new city (Charlotte) as well as see so many familiar and friendly faces a this conference. Now that I’m really making a go of my site, I’m also looking to pick up tips.

Ontario, Canada: We’re starting to loosely form a trip to Canada, specifically the area north of Toronto near Blue Mountain. There are some resorts there that my husband may review, and we’ll tag along as a family. While we’re there, we may plan a trip to Niagara Falls on the way back. We’ve been there as a couple but really want to take the kids. The main strip there is like Las Vegas for families – dinosaur putt-putt, Ripleys, waterparks and you name it.

On my wish list, which I think will be future summers, are visits to the Grand Canyon,  Colonial Williamsburg and Washington D.C.

Where will your summer take you?

Cruisin’ the bayou and beyond with Carnival

ImageA milestone birthday. Easter break from school. Yearning for warm weather and new adventures. Those thoughts eventually led me to book a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Conquest, sailing out of New Orleans.

I chose New Orleans because we’ve been to Florida several times so I wanted the kids to experience a new city. And boy, did we. In just a day, we hopped off the plane, left our bags at the hotel before check-in and went straight to a cemetery tour.

After the tour, we checked in to the Doubletree downtown and were excited to find that our room opened up to the rooftop pool but then quickly changed our tune when the water turned out to be pretty chilly.

We wandered around to find some good seafood for dinner and ended up seeing a couple of wedding parties pass by. This looksImage like such a fun tradition! We of course had to stop by Café du Monde for some beignets, too.

The next morning, we headed to the port. The check-in and boarding process was fairly easy, and we went to the Lido deck to await our room checkin. We already had our bathing suits on (from doing my research ahead of time) and I did see a few kids having a fit because they couldn’t go in the pool.

The first two days were sea days so spent our time getting to know the ship, and the kids were thrilled to have the kids club and meet new friends.

It’s hard to complain when the most difficult part of Imageyour vacation is finding a deck chair so you can sit in the sun!

Up next: Carnival cruise ports!
